Voi che sapete
che cosa è amor,
donne, vedete
s'io l'ho nel cor.
Quello ch'io provo
vi ridirò,
è per me nuovo,
capir nol so.
Sento un affetto
pien di desir,
ch'ora è diletto,
ch'ora è martir.
Gelo e poi sento
l'alma avvampar,
e in un momento
torno a gelar.
Ricerco un bene
fuori di me,
non so chi'l tiene,
non so cos'è.
Sospiro e gemo
senza voler,
palpito e tremo
senza saper.
Non trovo pace
notte né dì,
ma pur mi piace
languir così.
Voi che sapete
che cosa è amor,
donne, vedete
s'io l'ho nel cor.

Darling Draco,

How completely marvellous - I am so proud of you. I knew something was up because of all the sums that were suddenly flowing to the strangest detective agencies, not mine, and to Miss Granger, with whom I was pretty sure you were not having an affair. (I'm joking, darling, allow me a little joke? Because retrospectively I got quite scared.)

I want her dead, you know. My sister, the madwoman. Can someone kill her?

Of course I'll come to supper, and we'll go see him. What can I bring you? And what do you think might bring some pleasure or relief to Harry in his current state?

Much love, darling.

Draco? Draco? I think Regulus is trying to communicate with Severus again in his journal. Perhaps you can do something, but do make it clear to Severus that you're not angry with him, he worries that you're unhappy with him and unhappy in general. And he's afraid that you might yell at him, so whatever you do,  don't.

Poor boy, I can't get over how defiant he can be. As if he felt deep down that he should be punished. Perhaps you should just take him away from the computer and give him a hug. And I'm sure he'll like it if you show him the train.

Darling Harry, don't worry a bit. I'm very glad you like the car. Of course I'd love you to teach Draco to drive his. It was rather disappointing that he's never used it. Except perhaps don't let him race you quite immediately? There are ways to charm the airbags so that they're more effective, but still, at 280km/h, you can hurt yourself. If you'd like to go practice at Monza, you can call Piero Lardi at the Scuderia; use my name. Piero is really the Commendatore's son; everybody knows it now, he'll take care of you two if you bring Draco, or of you on your own if you can't get Draco interested, but I hope you will, I love a man who drives a fast car, don't you? And Draco darling, I'm sure you will adore this.

Dear Blaise,

I was extraordinarily touched by your thoughtful note and your even more thoughtful presents. The white narcissae are in a vase on my dressing table; they are lovely. It has been good to have you with me these past weeks when we worried so much about Draco. Not that this time is past; I have tried to step back but I see his gaunt face and his listless eyes, and I feel like crying. We had dinner yesterday, the two of us, and I'd never seen him prey to depression like this. I am glad that he has you as a friend - and for myself, I want to thank you again for your constant support and presence. You are a very dear and special young man.

Well. So Janus Ellenborough has practically had it with acting for Severus, and is only sticking with him out of loyalty to me.

Darling, please come to Eaton Square as soon as you like. It will be wonderful to see you. I have been worried about you, but I didn't want to interfere too much. But I have put Mr Pfaffenhofer with a double team of Kobolds to work on that horrible house's bind, or vow, or ward, or whatever it was. He's been talking to a Miss Angeline Frott-Nelson at St. Mungo's. And I plan to ask Bill about it, because really that... thing... has a curse on you, and Bill is very skilled at breaking those. And I'll ask your father to help, too, because Lucius has forgotten more Dark Magic than most people will ever learn, including Severus. If Severus loves you, he will love you anywhere, without a bind or a curse. If he doesn't, then there is no point in having you tied to that miniature Azkaban with mod cons. So far, the only person I haven't talked to is Harry, because I didn't want more trouble, but Harry is very fond of you, you know, and he would help, I know he would.

Don't bother about presents. We can go and have a nice dinner at the Ivy or Mirabelle somewhere comfortable; and we could test whether you can actually sleep here tonight; if not you can always floo back north.

Much love,
Mummy

03:08 pm - Etiolating [Filter: private]
It tears me apart, but so far I've kept myself strenuously out of Draco and Severus's affairs, because it seemed that the less interference there was, the faster they would get their quarrel behind them. But I don't like the look of things now. Draco is etiolating away, and since he's woken up he's been a virtual prisoner in that hateful hovel. Blaise is incredibly sweet and helpful, but he isn't telling me much. Enough, though, that I'm beginning to worry. And I daren't talk to Harry because he's back with Bill's young brother, and it would needlessly fan the flames.

But what I can do is give Pfaffenhofer unlimited credit and research money to break that damned curse Vow.

And come to think of it, that slip may be more accurate than I think. I must ask Bill for help.

Lucius, listen to me. You know what Blaise and his friend have been on about? Suddenly reminded me the Kobolds are still at Draco's cottage. Firecalled them, got Pfaffenhofer to send me his findings at once, no matter they're not organised, really, they can be so Swiss at times. Anyway. A cottage in the woods, how petit-bourgeois, and see what comes of it. That foul place is at least semi-sentient of its own. Perfectly capable of sealing an Unbreakable Vow in the right circumstances, and how much do you want to bet Draco and Severus provided plenty of that? Look, Lucius, they're still double-checking, but I'm sure. Go to the hospital. Go now. I'll meet you there. I'll try to get one of those wretched Kobolds to come with me, too.

This simply can't go on.

Blaise, you know I'd asked my Kobolds to check where Draco was spending money. How fitting that it would seem, from recent purchases of champagne, that this should be the village in Hampshire where you have your country place. Are your wards keyed to admit him? Because if yes, he's at your house.

Now, can any of you or all of you collect him? You can bring him here at Eaton Square; I'll have his bedroom prepared and warded, and a Healer called in. Don't tell me that four wizards can't manage to get my son back.

03:48 am - Owl Post: Elzbieta Ciureja
Dear Elzbieta,

I need to talk to you. Severus and Draco are in the throes of a Grand CrisisTM,  and there is talk of divorce, lawyers, etc.  I'll save us both time by saying that Draco had a fling with someone, which was unwise; but not serious. Now we have grandstanding of the kind only men can exhibit, you know the drill, my life is destroyed, the end of me, wreck, woe  sackcloth, ashes, etc. I don't think it would benefit either of them to divorce, so what do you think we can do to bring all this exhausting drama to an end? As if a casual fuck or three mattered at all in the grand scheme of things? Are we Americans?

Anyway, I value your advice probably more than anyone else's in this. Even a dear and usually level-headed friend of mine here, on whom, I must say, I depended somewhat, is all about the place bleating about bleeding wounds and killing blows and I don't know what. Elzbieta, I know Severus is deeply unhappy with this, and I'm infinitely sorry that he's going through it, but my point is that he wants to make himself  infinitely more and lastingly unhappy.  As for Draco, yes, he can be maddeningly irresponsible at times, but it's not as if he wasn't known for it. About the only sign of maturity and commitment I find in him is his love for Severus.

So. Please help me. If we leave this to men, it will be the Goblin wars for months and years, and I don't have the patience for it all.

Affectionately,
Narcissa

10:58 am - Private Post: Children!
Well, that cat is out of the bag. And a cagier moggie I hadn't seen in a long time. I had breakfast with Draco and Harry yesterday at Eaton Square, having more or less strong-armed Draco into coming clean. Well, not exactly strong-armed, but he certainly wasn't the one who initiated our cosy little chat in my bedroom the night before. I wonder how I managed to raise such a nervous boy. It took him a good while to admit that as long as he does love Severus, the whole point is to keep things perfectly discreet. "But, darling", I said, "look at this as the start of a wonderful friendship with Harry and stop worrying like this. Look at me and Remus." Not that he seemed especially pleased to be reminded of this, but I think it eventually percolated; and he started telling me about Harry in a rather charming way; there was admiration and empathy in a way, I must say, I've never heard him use before of anyone. Harry has awakened in Draco a sense of wonder, even of poetry at times, which I like very much. I'm not even sure he realises how much this changes him.

As for Harry, I could see he was one inch from wild Apparation when I showed up in the kitchen in the morning. I had to be careful not to laugh; I could see it would have been very badly received. But he's a sweet darling and he eventually calmed down enough to be fed scrambled egges and smoked salmon. It's funny but at times I caught the most unexpected look of pride in Draco's eye. And they do have a shorthand that's all theirs. If life had been different; if Lucius had encouraged different instincts in Draco; if Severus had not stepped in so many times...

No, this won't change things; but I think it's good for both of them, and I hope they can enjoy things and take them lightly.

I must organise a few extra charms and wards for Draco; I'll ask Mr Kormik. I'm not sure Severus would take things well; lightly isn't and has never been part of his vocabulary. In which case a little confusion would most certainly be for his own good.

Fuck, fuck, FUCK, what is Draco UP to now? If he thinks I can't tell the signs, he's being even more narcisstically self-indulgent than usual. They were all but holding hands the other day at tea. And now he's ensconced in his room here as if he'd never had a house of his own. How long has this been going on? How far have they got? Are they screwing, dammit? And what's got into Harry? I refuse to answer "Draco" to that one, thankyouverymuch. And how close are we to nuclear war if Severus or Bill's regrettable young brother get a sniff of this? Really, I can see the point of Severus as someone who desperately cares for my son; that match doesn't have money or age or looks or lineage to recommend it otherwise, so WHAT the FUCK happens now?

Draco simply won't even begin to answer any light remark that starts with the name "Harry". Of course I can't press him on this, it wouldn't help, but WHAT is he PLAYING at, dammit?

And what's this new faradiddle about removing some no doubt deeply dodgy stuff from Severus's lab at Hogwarts one step ahead of the Aurors? Why oh why do I have Ellenborough Jeffries Rich on retainer, if my own son will behave like an East End barrow boy caught with his hand in the till? What's all this commotion about?

Dolores Umbridge is a vicious cow. Hortense loathes her, so firecall her and tell her everything, mention that I wonder how she is these days. I have always stayed clear of Rufus Scrimgeour who is, to put it mildly, an imbecile. Don't be fooled by Slughorn's number, he's got a mind like a steel trap; leave him to Severus if you think Severus will actually go to him; if not, call on him yourself. And Simon isn't a young man with a taste for diamonds but someone nearer Severus's age with a taste for democracy.

But Rufus will help you.

AFRICA, darling, really, some places should get the tsunamis other countries don't deserve. When I see the back of this dump, it'll never be too soon, but Simon is still in that horrible jail even though I must have bribed a score of officials. I'm sure I told Bill to drop by, but does he? All of one piece. As my wretched cousin Sirius says (and you can tell I'm at the end of my tether when I quote him), HA!

Anyway, quick quick quick: take your jewels to Chaumet's in Paris, place Vendôme. It's not that goblins don't know a thing about diamonds; it's that they tend to undervalue everything. Plus, if it's an heirloom, the settings and workmanship count, too, and there goblins are utterly clueless.

Love, have to run. The flamingo has a little something for darling Artemisia.

05:42 pm - I'll do it
Well, I've seen the best - that first night - and I've seen the worst - the night of the full moon - and I'll do it, by Merlin I shall adopt the girl for Remus if nobody else he cares for will. He's not telling names, but I can guess.

That Sunday night was... horrible. Poor child. She was almost like possessed, it was impossible to quieten her down. Even Draco at his worse - and he's thrown me some pretty temper tantrums as a small child - wasn't ever like that. Jeevesy was completely thrown by it, he couldn't think of anything, first time ever. It was obvious she was missing some key connection with her father, poor child, and it was nothing we could do. Eventually I took her from Draco's old bedroom in the nursery and we made her a bed in the library inner room, which has no windows, and therefore no moon access at all. It helped a little, but not much. My arms are all scratched, but I don't think she meant anything by it - she never tried to bite, for instance. But obviously Remus ought never to have left her like that, now they have connected. "I hadn't thought to talk about it with her", he says. Men! Really, what can you expect, werewolves or not? Clueless, the whole lot. Clueless cubed.

But I expect they can be taught )

She is simply adorable. How bewildering for her, new place, new language, new father, new everything, no wonder she sometimes keeps so quiet behind those extraordinary eyes. I have no Czech, but I speak enough German that we found words we both knew outside the translation charm - she must leave it off at times, otherwise she won't learn.

Remus, poor darling, is alternately coping very well and going sligthly bonkers with it all; in other words, a perfectly normal reaction. He turned my hair dark (heavens! I looked so much like Bella even he realised it hadn't perhaps been his brightest idea) when Artemisia showed she was completely bewildered by pale hair. I turned it back the way it was and encouraged her to play with it (the resulting tangled pleats and knots gave Issy quite a bit of work afterwards, but never mind.) Has she ever been in some sort of feminine care? But it's hardwired; she likes glittering jewels, make-up and anything in pink. I Transfigured my pearl ring to give her a small pearl bracelet, quite the thing for a child, and she literally lit up. The look on Remus's face was priceless. But for all that, she needs him first and foremost.

I told him she can come to Eaton Square during the full moon )

Remus looked incredibly sheepish when I raised an inquisitive eyebrow. Another long story he will tell me one day, or at least what he remembers of it - and I told him he'd said nothing even before his amnesia.

Dear Remus,

Not to worry, it was very obvious the prank was preventing everything. (Don't ever tell the wretched boys, or let Bill hear me say this, but it was rather clever of them, wasn't it? And certainly you must think up some suitable retribution, or they'll do something worse next time, not to mention that this could have had bad unforeseen consequences - suppose you needed to go to St Mungo's?)

Yes, Bill is still around, sweet darling. I rather stamped my foot at Mr Kormik and told him the bank owed him some time off after this complete nonsense and his twenty-four-hour cursebreaking stint. HA! as my wretched cousin would say.

Thai sounds terrific. Do drop by!

Love,
